If I already have asphalt in my yard, what are my options?
Entrance already paved
In the case of an entrance already paved, three options are possible:
Option 1 – Asphalt cover in place
If the asphalt is not too damaged, it can be covered over. The first step is to ensure that the new thickness of asphalt can be laid everywhere without harming existing installations (doors, windows, sidewalks, etc.). In such a case, it is still possible to do the work, but the existing asphalt must be removed from the problem areas.
The necessary steps are: kill the weeds, clean the asphalt, remove the loose pieces, apply glue and paving. Correction of irregularities in the paving with asphalt may be necessary before paving the final layer. It is also very important that the surface is dry, as the glue will not stick. Likewise, if the surface is not clean.
For this type of paving, EB-10C mix is most commonly used, but EC-10 is expected to be increasing in popularity.
Option 2 – Remove the asphalt in place
If the asphalt is too damaged, it must be removed and proceed as if there had not been any. Usually, the asphalt to be removed is graded in one layer. However, in some cases, it is 2 to 3 layers that must be removed. Therefore, if this has not been foreseen, the customer should expect an additional cost to remove the excess asphalt and for the addition of 0-¾ ”material to compensate for the excess thickness of the asphalt which has been removed. It is not always possible to see first if there are several layers. We are not obliged, sometimes in these cases, to raise the paving so high, we can put it back to the height of the initial layer. So this minimizes the additional costs of removing excess asphalt.
Option 3 – Spraying the asphalt in place with part of the granular foundations
For a large paved driveway with an acceptable foundation, the spray option may be considered. The purpose of this is to crush the existing asphalt with part of the existing foundation. Then the leveling of the surface is done. If there is a surplus of material, it is either extended further, put in reserve or removed from the site. Subsequently, we can proceed to the paving. The advantage of this process is that an effort is made to avoid removing the material from the site, so the thickness of the foundations is increased. Normally, most or all of the cost of this step is the equivalent of removing and removing existing asphalt. The economic advantage of this method must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. This method is more ecological.
