12 Steps To Clean, Repair, And Refurbish Your Asphalt Driveway

Lots of stains on your asphalt driveway?

Over time, it is quite normal for stains to appear on the asphalt. This is why it will need to be maintained and cleaned regularly.

But how do you clean this type of surface? This is what you will learn here! Here are 12 tips for clean asphalt!

1. Use rainwater to wash the asphalt

Here is a very ecological way to wash your asphalt! Place buckets on your property and wait for them to fill with rainwater. Then you can rinse your asphalt by first sweeping the residue towards the street.

2. Use a gasoline sprayer

The sprayer is an excellent device for thoroughly cleaning asphalt. It is also good for cleaning concrete. You will be able to buy this device in many stores, such as Canadian Tire.

3. Absorb greasy stains on the asphalt

As soon as you notice oil or gasoline stains on the asphalt, for example, hurry to pour cat litter on it to absorb the excess.

4. Use a degreasing cleaning product

A domestic product such as Hertel will be perfect. Spray it on the stain and let it act. Then scrub with a brush and rinse off the asphalt. Repeat as needed if there are still stains.

5. Clean the asphalt with laundry soap

In a bucket, mix some laundry soap with a large amount of water. Pour the water on the asphalt pavement and scrub well with a broom. Then rinse.

6. Apply a sealer to the asphalt

Preferably made of asphalt, this sealant will give a brand new appearance to your asphalt driveway!

7. Remove weeds from your driveway

To remove the weeds that grow in the cracks of your asphalt, all you have to do is to pour boiling water over them. Repeat as often as needed.

8. Clean the asphalt with white vinegar

Also to remove weeds, you can also use white vinegar. Mix the vinegar with boiling water and pour some into the cracks.

9. Say goodbye to dandelions

To remove dandelions that grow in cracks in your asphalt, you can pull them out with a knife starting at the root.

10. Pour in coarse salt

Pour coarse salt into the holes in your asphalt to prevent weeds from growing there!

11. Repair holes, crevices, and potholes in the asphalt

With a cold chisel or concrete and asphalt saw, remove crumbling asphalt, pebbles, and remove any loose asphalt debris.

Using a spatula or trowel, apply an asphalt patch mixture into the hole, letting the mixture protrude about 3/4 of an inch (2 cm) above the surface.

Then compact the asphalt with a compaction tool such as a jumping compactor, vibrating plate and roller compactor for larger jobs.

12. Revive, seal, and protect asphalt

To beautify and extend the life of the asphalt you have just repaired, spread a protective coating evenly over the surface according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Most products on the market apply in 1 coat only. Start by brushing the filler around the contours of your asphalt yard, then spread it over the entire surface with a roller or squeegee.
